The neon, the door, the parking space
I wanted cheap and close to the road. I got both. I did not get a story to post.
A roadside motel
MINUTECRITIC · Jul 25, 2026
The motel is the original American hotel and we still use it when we are being honest. My room was a rectangle with a painting of a boat. The AC worked like it was in a fight. I slept anyway.
This is not a design review. It is a lock-and-curtains review. When those work, the score goes up. When they do not, leave. There is always another rectangle down the road.
Inspect the lock, the smell, and whether the curtains meet. If those three pass, you have a night.

A festival Sunday rate is a movie ticket with a bed attached
Toronto is mid-fest. The room is no longer a place to sleep. It is a line item in someone else's premiere.

The three-night minimum
The room is not the story. The stay rules are the story. They always are, the week before a holiday.

A free night that was not free
I 'paid' with points and still did math at the desk. The math is the stay.
