James is a heist of a book you thought you already knew. Everett lets Jim think in a register the original novel could not afford to hear. The joke, and it is a cold one, is that Jim was always the adult in the boat.

It still moves like an adventure. Con men, river towns, the American habit of not seeing what is in front of the raft. If you have been avoiding it because you think you already know the river, that is the tell.

Read it, then look at Twain again and wince a little. That is the point.
