The craft book I still trust
Stephen King's memoir-slash-manual. I go back to it when the internet is being loud about 'process.'
On Writing (2000)
MINUTECRITIC · Aug 2, 2026
On Writing is two books in one and both of them work. The life story is better than it has any right to be. The craft part is simple: read a lot, write a lot, cut the stuff that is just you clearing your throat. I needed that again.
I do not agree with every rule. I also do not need to. If you write anything, even a review, this is still the one I would hand you before a YouTube guru.
The rare advice book that is also a good story. Open to any chapter.

The hold that finally landed
The book arrives after the discourse has moved on. That is the correct time to read it.

The self-help book that will not leave
James Clear's habit book is still on every list. I reread it. It is still a pamphlet wearing a hardcover.
