The fall preview list

The fall preview list is a menu. It is not a meal.
September's most reliable cultural object is a numbered rundown of things you have not seen yet. Treat it like a circular, not a commandment.
The fall preview list
MINUTECRITIC · Sep 2, 2026
Every September the culture industry prints a menu and calls it a worldview. Twenty films. Fifteen albums. Thirty books. A television slate. The list is handsome. The list is shareable. The list is, in the technical sense, a circular: here is what we are selling, arranged as if the arrangement were an argument. It is not an argument. It is inventory with nicer type.
The honest use is logistical. A preview list can tell you what is opening, what is touring, what is being positioned as important so you can ignore the positioning and look at the work. The dishonest use is moral. You are late. You are uncultured. You missed the only weekend. Keeping up is a job description. Most people already have one.
Notice the verbs. These lists do not say here are some things. They say you need to. Need is a strong word for a limited series about rich people in linen. Need is a strong word for an album that will be on the same services next year, long after the list has been replaced by another list that pretends the last one was ancient history. Culture is not produce. Most of it keeps.
There is a class tell in the urgency. The person who can see four festival films, two Broadway bookings, and a tasting menu in the same ten days is not the default reader. The default reader has a shift, a kid, a commute, or a brain that can do one story at a time. A list that cannot survive contact with a normal Wednesday is a list for a trade.
If you want a practice, steal three items. Put them on a real calendar, the kind with hours. Watch or read or hear those three. Let the other twenty-seven remain a maybe. A maybe is a healthy relationship to art. A completed list is a completed shopping trip. One of those leaves you with a life. The other leaves you with a screenshot.
Useful as a map. Poisonous as a personality. Steal three items and close the tab.

Broadway, slightly out of breath
The play is sharper than the event. The event is what a lot of people paid for.
