A touring musical at the National Theatre

On-line review · 36/60 pts

Broadway, slightly out of breath

The play is sharper than the event. The event is what a lot of people paid for.

Touring productions are the circulatory system of American theater: a New York room, a D.C. ceiling, a poster that implies you missed something in another city. Sometimes the play survives the extra air. Sometimes it becomes an event about its own ticket price.

I had a decent night. Design traveled. Intimacy did not always. If the text is doing work you cannot get from a stream, go. If the text is a souvenir of a better production, wait.

See it if the writing is the reason. Skip it if you only want the original cast's ghost.
