Holiday tennis is the rare broadcast that does not panic about time

Round of 16 from Queens, a day with no NFL, and a night session that is allowed to be long.

US Open round of 16, on television

MINUTECRITIC · Sep 7, 2026

A Grand Slam weekday on a national holiday is one of the last honest sports broadcasts left. Nobody is trying to get you to the next window. The window is the match. If it goes long, that is the show. If a player looks human for three hours, that is the show. Football will be back Wednesday with a Super Bowl rematch and a graphics package that could file taxes. Tonight is still tennis.

The fourth round is where a tournament stops being a crowd and starts being a draw. Pegula and Shelton already look like a New York story. The rest of the day is the rest of the field trying not to become a clip. Watch the ball, not the lower third. Score is for the coverage as a way to spend a closed-office Monday: high, because it does not apologize for taking time.

This is the holiday remote that still respects duration. Stay for a match, not a segment.
