A half-smoke, eaten standing up

The District on a bun
Chili, mustard, a bun that is losing, and a city that still argues about whose is best.
A half-smoke, eaten standing up · Washington, D.C.
MINUTECRITIC · Jun 30, 2026
A half-smoke is not a hot dog with a press kit. It is a split smoked sausage with chili that has opinions. I ate one standing up because that is the correct posture. Sitting down makes it a different, worse meal.
Tourists will call it a hot dog. Let them. If you are from here, you already have a side. If you are not, start with the place a cab driver would actually eat, not the one with the mural.
Get it from a place that has been doing this longer than the food trucks. Napkins are not optional.

The Week 1 grocery spread
Food/Sep 13, 2026
The Sunday spread is a format. Stop styling it like a commercial.
Wings, a tray, a dip that came from a tub. Score the logistics. The recipe is not the point.

The Labor Day cookout

The cookout is a format. Stop asking it to be a restaurant.
Char, paper plates, a table that is also a holding area. Score the form, not a secret sauce.

Late-summer corn

Corn, while it still means August
The last honest week of the year to eat this. After Labor Day it is a frozen vegetable in a costume.
