A political week is now a stack of clips. Someone says a sentence. The sentence is cut. The cut is captioned. The caption becomes the event. Commentary that treats the caption as the country is doing advertising, not news.

This desk exists because culture and civic life share a nervous system. We are not a campaign. We are a review of the information environment: who got airtime, which process story got buried, what a voter would actually have to do on a Tuesday.

Personality coverage is cheap to produce and easy to share. Oversight, appropriations, local election administration, and the boring machinery of a government that still has to mail things — those are expensive. They are also the news. When we write about politics here, we will privilege the expensive story.
